Eulogy For A Good Dog

He obeyed –
Sit, come, down. Once,
“leave it,” the command,
I heard, his honest eyes on mine,
an internal struggle – squeak
and crunch –
small bones in his mouth
before he dropped the mouse.
He rooted in the cat’s litter box.
He learned to operate the foot pedal
on the bathroom trashcan.
He ate used tampons.
He was free
with his kisses.
